Knitting Jenny Pattern 128: Irish Aran Islands Inspired Cabled Ski Hat features a classic seamless design of textured cables that spiral horizontally up the head, with triangular segments converging at the crown.

Knitting Jenny Pattern 128 is influenced by the historic knitting heritage of the Aran Islands, which includes wool traditions of knitting complex patterns with cables and other textured motifs.

Often knit with natural wool, knitted cables are associated with aspects of the sea and land of the Aran Islands, located approximately 30 miles from the city of Galway, situated on the Atlantic coast of Ireland.

Knitting Jenny Pattern 128 includes cabled motifs and instructions in the following inclusive formats:

  • Charts
  • Written Instructions
  • Illustrations
  • Photographic Tutorial

The ski hat is knit flat, and is constructed as follows:

  • Cast on, knit flat a very long narrow cabled ribbon, hand stitch the cabled ribbon in a spiral that travels horizontally up the head, then pick up crown stitches to decrease circularly at the apex.

Knitting Jenny Pattern 128 features Tahki brand Kashmir yarn, which is 75% merino wool, 23% silk, and 2% cashmere.

Alternately, a different wool brand——though similar yarn weight——can be substituted for Knitting Jenny Pattern 128.

The Tahki brand Kashmir putup is 40 gram balls that include approximately 97 meters, per the yarn labels pictured on this page.

The finished hat weighs approximately 98 grams.

The following knitting tools are suggested:

  • 4.5mm needles, which can be double pointed, straight, or circular (for the head)
  • 3.5mm double pointed needles (for the crown)
  • 4.5mm cable needle (for cabling)

The gauge for Knitting Jenny Pattern 128 is:

  • 22 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) over the complete textured cable pattern with knit and purl stitches, knit circularly with 4.5mm knitting needles, after washing, blocking, drying.

The hat pattern specifies 4.5mm knitting needles for the cabled patternwork, which produces a Size Large hat.

To change the hat size, change the needles per the following technical specifications for the adult head:

  • 3.5mm needles; Size Small; Approximately 21 inches in head circumference
  • 4.0mm needles; Size Medium; Approximately 22 inches in head circumference
  • 4.5mm needles; Size Large; Approximately 23 inches in head circumference

To support knitting education and consistent, uniform stitch definition, the following chapters are included, titled:

  • Seamlessly Joining Circular Knitting
  • Water Splicing
  • Washing and Blocking

The book includes 14 illustrations and 24 pages.
