Knitting Jenny Pattern 116: Irish Aran Islands Inspired Cabled Ski Hat features a classic seamless design of textured cables, with triangular segments converging at the crown.

The pattern design was influenced by the historic knitting heritage of the Aran Islands, which includes wool traditions of knitting complex patterns with cables and other textured motifs.

Often knit with undyed wool, knitted cables are associated with aspects of the sea and land of the Aran Islands, located approximately 30 miles from the city of Galway, situated on the Atlantic coast of Ireland.

The Aran Islands are an archipelago of three islands: Inis Mór, Inis Meáin, and Inis Oírr. Since the nineteenth century, the people of the Aran Islands have cultivated textured cabled knitting, from which Knitting Jenny Pattern Collection 13 is inspired.

Knitting Jenny Pattern 116 features a natural white shade of Tahki brand Kashmir yarn, which is 75% merino wool, 23% silk, and 2% cashmere.

Alternately, a different wool brand——though similar yarn weight——can be substituted for Knitting Jenny Pattern 116.

The Kashmir put up is 40 gram balls that include approximately 97 meters.

The finished hat weighs approximately 66 grams.

Knitting Jenny Pattern 116 includes knitting patterns, motifs, and instructions in the following inclusive formats:

  • Chart
  • Written Instructions
  • Illustrations

The ski hat is knit circularly, and is constructed as follows:

  • Cast on, knit the brim, increase, knit the cable patterns of the head, then systematically decrease at the crown.

The following knitting needles and tools are suggested.

  • 2.5mm, 16-inch circular knitting needle (for the brim)
  • 4.0mm, 16-inch circular knitting needle (for the head)
  • 4.0mm double pointed needles (for the crown)
  • 4.0mm cable needle (for cabling)
  • stitch markers
  • scissors
  • blunt darning needle

The gauge for Knitting Jenny Pattern 116 is:

  • 20 stitches and 26 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) over the complete textured cable pattern with knit and purl stitches, knit circularly with 4.0mm knitting needles, after washing, blocking, drying.

The pattern specifies 4.0mm knitting needles for the cabled patternwork, which produces a Size Medium hat. To change the hat size, change the needles per the following technical specifications for the adult head:

  • 3.5mm needles, Size Small, Approximately 21 inches in head circumference
  • 4.0mm needles, Size Medium, Approximately 22 inches in head circumference
  • 4.5mm needles, Size Large, Approximately 23 inches in head circumference

To support knitting education and consistent, uniform stitch definition, the following chapters are included, titled:

  • Seamlessly Joining Circular Knitting
  • Splicing Yarns

The book includes 8 illustrations and 20 pages.
