03 February 2007 Venus Some day, if we are very lucky, we will all be old. I loved this sad movie, and I suspect Peter O'Toole will finally get his Oscar, and he will look great on the red carpet. I like his attitude. In a recent interview, he said he was "still in the bloody game". Well of course he is. The costume designer did such a good job, though, at making Peter O'Toole look very very old indeed, by emphasizing long un-cut un-washed messy hair, and ill-fitting baggy old clothes, shuffling about in slippers, cardigans for all the old men. Now I understand why Dad absolutely put his foot down when I initially suggested knitting a cardigan for him. Cardigans, he said, are for old men. And now I know that is true. Even though Dad and Peter O'Toole are the same age, Dad is no old man. Dad is the most youthful person you'll meet, quick with a laugh and a ha ha, backpacking around the world by himself with no itinerary and not thinking anything of arriving in Urumqi at midnight with no hotel reservation. So, this movie was interesting to me. Granted, in this movie I would have cut two specific crude words and one specific crude scene, but other than that, it was a good sad thought-provoking movie. Peter O'Toole. The poor man was just hungry for love. Who isn't? Even if you've got love already, who doesn't want more? Love is like money or good green yarn. There is no such thing as enough.
Oh did you notice the fair isle hat Peter O'Toole wears? Dark navy blue with white fair isle patterning? I am inspired to design a hat like that, knit in the round, with a fold up cuff, but more densely packed fair isle patterning and a much bigger pom-pom on top.
