Notes on a Scandal

Pay close attention to the knitwear worn by Cate Blanchett. She wears some nice things. I especially think it’s nice that they show her wearing the same cardigan in several different scenes (which is realistic, as opposed to the normal costume way of putting the actress in a new garment for each new scene), and the scarf she wears during her pub confession is great although, I believe, unfortunately crochet. Notice the lace scarf, too, which would look great knitted in our favorite green jelly-colored Kid Silk Haze.

Meanwhile, so much hoo-ha has been made about this movie, regarding the teacher-student-relationship theme. I don’t see what the big deal is. They say (in the movie and in society in general now) that the student was fifteen, that he was underage, and they make it sound as though a fifteen year old is angelic and pure. As if the teacher must have taken advantage of the situation.

Come on. That fifteen year old was an adult in all but age, as is seen so often these days. It is shocking, if you think about it, how kids are nowadays, how adult they are, in dress and language and action. Some blame it on the media. I blame it on the parents. Money and approval come from parents, and, in turn, kids buy revealing clothes and revolting music. No wonder they act as they do. If I had kids, I would be very aware of what’s going on with them, on the verge of micro-management. That's the job of a parent: to be a parent, not a buddy.

Meanwhile, don’t you agree that Judi Dench did a great job, as always? She is an actress who consistently delivers. Her character, though, was so sad and lonely. Which is just something I just don’t understand. Judi really needs to take up knitting. There’s no such thing as a bored knitter, or a lonely knitter, thanks to the internet and myriad ktogs around town. And it’s too bad Judi Dench can’t hook up with Peter O’Toole from Venus. I think they’d make a great pair, both plain hungry for love.
