Die Hard

On Friday I was lucky enough to have two great job interviews. They were in opposite sides of town, and I found that as I was walking through Piccadilly, I had a good 90 minutes to kill before the next interview. And what's the best way to kill time in Piccadilly? Why, going to the movies, of course.

So I popped into the moviehouse and found Die Hard just starting. Perfect.

Now I'm going into this movie with a bad attitude. I have no intention of liking it. And even without the time constraints, I surely would have walked out midway through the movie.

But surprise, surprise, I found myself really liking the movie. I am shocked. I also think this is a movie that my brothers would like, too. (Are you listening.....Chris, Steve, Joe?)

There are too many funny lines in this movie to relate. You've just got to see it. Sure, it's a big American summer blockbuster kind of film. It's everything, therefore, that it should be. It's funny. It's clever (enough). There's action. There's a cameo by Kevin Smith (wherein he's actually speaking).

I had read much in the newspapers about how Bruce Willis was too "old" for this part. That he's too "old" to be playing an action hero.

I wonder if they said that in the States, too. Because it doesn't surprise me here. So often in England I hear the word, ageism, and read about ageism, and hear about ageism. Did I mention ageism? Really, it's over promoted. Not that it's not true. I do believe there is rampant ageism in England. Come on, even I've experienced it (during my Master's degree, at job interviews).

But the thing is, nobody should give Bruce Willis grief about being too "old" to play an action hero. He's great. And so very fit. More fit than most guys half his age.

So, after 90 minutes of dumb fun, I had to leave the moviehouse. I could not blow off my interview. (Incidentally, the interview was in Liverpool Street----what a neat part of London.)

I've never done this before, but a few days later, I sought out Die Hard again. I wanted to see the end of the movie. So, I popped into the movie 90 minutes late, sat in the very back so as not to disturb others, and watched the end. This is certainly a first, to re-visit a movie that I originally walked out of.
