All about me

31 August 2007

Breach

Call me shallow, but I do like a good CIA movie, or an FBI movie, or any movie about the depth and breadth of the American government. It actually makes me a little proud. And in awe. And there's so much fodder for good scripts.

This movie is, apparently, the "true story" of Robert Hanssen, an FBI agent who sold secrets to the Soviet Union. I remember reading about this case in the newspaper. It was big. I didn't, though, like the way the story was treated in the movie. They really made Hanssen appear like a twisted psycho whereas in reality he was just a conservative, successful man who made some really bad decisions.

I'm not defending his actions. Treason is a horrible concept. But hey, have you never made a bad decision in your life?

And I can't say I appreciate the way the movie depicted Hanssen's religious beliefs. This movie was one non-stop bash on the Catholic Church. Now, that's one thing that really, really irks me: the constant Catholic bash. It's completely unnecessary.

What's so wrong about a man who attends Mass every day? Why is it that in this day, church-going is looked down upon? Why can't we just live and let live? I don't see what's so hard about that.

So, in conclusion, I would not necessarily recommend this movie. It could have been much, much better.
