Quote
"Before a man gets married he's like a tree in the forest. He stands there independent, an entity unto himself. And he's chopped down. His branches are cut off, he's stripped of his bark and thrown into the river with the rest of the logs. Then this tree is taken to the mill, and when it comes to he's no longer a tree. He's a vanity table, the breakfast nook, the baby crib, then the newspaper that lines the family garbage can!"
Review
That funny quote was said by the thrice-married millionaire character played by the wonderful Tony Randall, in Doris Day's movie, Pillow Talk, also starring the late great hunky Rock Hudson.

In the movie, they share a party line. I remember having a party line in our own household, in upstate New York, in the 1970s. In retrospect, though, I wonder why party lines were even necessary. Was there really such a premium price placed on a private line? Were there so few phone lines to go around? Can someone please explain to me the significance of party lines?

As for the book, it was alright, just. I do generally enjoy reading biographies. I like reading about the lives of successful people. I am mostly interested in learning how the person achieved success; how they got their lucky break; how they recognized opportunity; what was the pivotal moment that transformed them into a 'success'?
