Quote
|
"Two days after I bury my parents, I am summoned to the offices of Edmund Hyde, to hear the details of their estate. I sit in a hard leather chair across from the man himself as it gradually sinks in that there is nothing to discuss. At first I think he's mocking me. Apparently my father has been taking payments in the form of beans and eggs for nearly two years."

Review
|
This is the sad story of a young vet student at Cornell, whose parents have just died in a tragic auto accident. The kid, an only child, is close to graduation and had planned on joining his vet dad in the family business. But, his parents are gone, and the bank owns everything.
This book is set in the Depression, and it's an interesting view into life of the 1930s. The vet student drops out of college, just shy of his graduation, which seems like a stupid shame. All he had to do was take his exams, after which he'd be able to land a good vet job.
But no. He doesn't do what's sensible. He hits the road. He jumps on a train to nowhere. He joins the circus.
This is not a great book, but it was indeed entertaining. I especially liked the descriptions of Depression-era circus life.
