I hated this book and its anti-Catholic theme. In fact, the Brontes seem to like that as a theme, in fiction and in their lives (for I have read much biographical info on them) and I have therefore decided to cancel my membership in the Bronte Society. I just think it’s shockingly hypocritical of the Brontes to play at being holier-than-thou daughters of a clergymen yet they keep putting down the Catholics. How two-faced can you get. Yes, I am aware of the anti-Catholic nature of English society around the time this book was written. So, I know that the Brontes were not alone. But still, it's really inexcusable.
